Snow - Latest Road Closures - 18h00 9th Aug 2012

The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban is now OPEN but motorists are urged to exercise care on roads that are still slippery with patches of ice on the edges.

The R617 from Kokstad to Franklin is still closed as at 17h30 this afternoon.


Snow - Latest on Road Closures - 06h00 9th Aug 2012


The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban has again been closed between Estcourt and Mooi River.Black Ice seems to be the major problem and traffic is being diverted onto the R103 which is the old and very narrow national road (from the 1960's). Apparantly big trucks are being kept back, on the N3. Long delays can be expected.


All the passes are apparantly open but heavy rains in the Eastern Cape has made driving very dangerous with floding and road surface damage.


N3 between Harrismith and Montrose CLOSED to remove ice in roads. Traffic backed up and heavy conditions expected.

If you are travelling in the Eastern Cape and KZN extreme caution is required.


Snow Road Closures - Latest - 13h00 8th August

See the LATEST on road closures here - THURSDAY 9th August Some passes have been reopened per traffic departments. According to RSG Spectrum program at 13h00 all the Eastern Cape passes have been reopened. 

The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban is open, but traffic is heavy and roads still treacherous in places.

Other Kwa Zulu Natal roads remain closed as reported this morning.

Rescue efforts on the Swartberg - Kokstad road continue.

The Ashton Montagu road remains closed due to flood damage.

The Kestell Qua Qua road is reopened.

The N1 near Springfontein is reopened after a major accident this morning.

FOR THE LATEST NEWS ON ROAD CLOSURES SEE ---- 9th August Report    Snow Falls across much of the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal has resulted in many roads being closed.

South Africa - N1 and N12 - Now Open

Despite the press announcement that the N1 and N12 would remain closed all of today the 18h00 newscast on RSG stated that both are open. Traffic Authorities say that caution needed as the roads are still wet and driving conditions are still poor.

No word on the Eastern cape Roads including the N6 AND N9.

Weather forecasts for Monday indicate a drying up from the South and West, so perhaps back to normal by Tuesday.
