Langebaan:  Cycling Fun Day - Dec 2009

There is a great day of fun in the sun planned for Sunday 12th December 2009 with the staging of the annual Lagoon Cycle Challenge in Langebaan. The event takes place exclusively in the West Coast National Park along the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon.

There are two races on of 30kms and one of 80kms. The race starts at the San Parks Offices and ends at the top of Stumpnose Rock. On the way you follow the shoreline around the lagoon and ride through the most beautiful Cape Fynbos.

Fancy finding a frog on Friday night? Join all the froggers in the Chrissiesmeer area for a night of frogging on Friday 5th December 2009

Chrissiesmeer is known as the Lake District of South Africa with over two hundred lakes and dams within a fairly small geographical area.

Of course, where there's water there's normally a friendly frog frolicking for all he's worth. Not everyone is into the big five but most young boys I know (and there's enough in our family to confirm it) have no problem


Dullstroom Festival of Art, Culture and Environment

The annual fun filled Art Culture and Environment Festival starts on Wednesday 16th December 2009 and ends on Sunday 20th. It is a wonderful way to kick start your year end vacation and promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The theme this year are the five senses and the artists of Dullstroom and the surrounding area will be using painting, mosaic, sculpture, pottery, glasswork, beadwork and music to awake the senses. Art classes,  makeup classes and the culinary arts will all be on display at the many locations set up for this Festival.

The festival has a varied program and artists will perform  throughout Dullstroom, and in the evenings they will provide entertainment to patrons at the various restaurants in town.

The organisers of the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees have announced the dates for the 2010 festival, The fun begins on Thursday 1st April and ends on Saturday 10th. Like red wine this festival improves with age and 2010 promises to better than ever. Every year many are disappointed as accommodation is snapped up early. So now is the time to plan ahead and avoid disappointment.

The KKNK has been running for 15 years and the dedicated team responsible for the festival continually surprise the arts and entertainment world with dramatic new material, talented newcomers

The Free State and Vaal Triangle Regions of the Honorary Rangers are organising the Sasol Golden Gate Birding Weekend from the 19th to 21st February 2010 at the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

It is a fund raiser for conservation projects run by South African National Parks.

You will participate in the official bird census for the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, which in 2009 confirmed over 100 species in the area, including 8 new inhabitants.


Blue Flag Status for Richards Bay

Kwa Zulu Natal North Coast has gained a Blue Flag Beach

The bustling harbour town of Richard’s Bay has been elavated to a top holiday destination with the granting of Blue Flag Beach status to Alkantstrand Beach.

Alkantstrand Beach is north of the harbour entrance and is accessed by way of Davidson Road or Bayview Drive.

Bredasdorp Air Show

Once every two years the Flight Test and Development Centre of the South African Airforce holds an airshow. It takes place on 13th to15th November 2009 at the Air Force Base Overberg.

South Africa’s fighting machines plus a host of civilian planes will strut their stuff.

Entrance Fee is R50 for adults and a whole lot less for kids. You could also win a flip in a jet fighter.

Mc Dougalls Bay gets Blue Flag status

The Northern Cape has finally achieved Blue Flag Status! Mac Dougall’s Bay just South of Port Nolloth has been accredited by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) as the Northern Cape’s first Blue Flag Beach.

Mac Dougall’s Bay is about as far from Upington as Durban is from Johannesburg so it makes an ideal holiday resort for many in the far Northern Cape, Capetonians and even some from across the border in Namibia.

Recent press releases quoting the Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk indicate that South Africa has increased its number of Blue  Flag Beaches from 18 this year to 29 for the next 12 months.

The Official website for Blue Flag Beaches has yet to post the latest  list but it appears that with the exception of Clifton’s fourth beach  all the other blue flag beaches have retained their status.
