Ficksburg - Cherry Festival - November 2011

Ficksburg in the Free State Highlands has been host to the annual Cherry Festival for 43 years. The 44th version of the Cherry Festival is scheduled for Thursday to Saturday 17th to 19th November 2011.

The annual Cherry Festival is the longest running harvest festival in South Africa and every year it seems that the organisers find new ways of staying out in front when it comes to customer satisfaction.

The program for 2011 has not yet been released but if previous years are anything to by, those lucky enough


Laingsburg - Karoo Ultra Marathon - Sept 2011

The Laingsburg Karoo Ultra Marathon takes place on Saturday 11th September 2011. This year will be the 41st running of this event which also includes the 21.1 km Laingsburg Challenge and the 10km “Laingsburg Short” Entries to the three events are limited to 500 for the Ultra marathon and 250 for the Laingsburg Challenge and Laingsburg Short.

This is an incredibly tough race through hard country and is definitely not for sissies. Completing this race is as challenging as a Comrades Marathon and of course the races are run in terms of ASA and ASWD rules.

Darling - Wild Flower Show - Sept 2011

The Darling Wild Flower Show takes place from Friday 16th September through Sunday 18th September 2011. The Darling Wild Flower Show uses the Darling Sports Club as the venue and the hall is fully landscaped for this beautiful display. Pricing is R25 for adults which includes a tractor ride to Duckitts Nurseries to see the orchid house as well as a walk through the Oude Post wetland adjoining the Nursery.

The Swartland Skou/Show takes place from 7th to 10th September 2011. Considered to be one of the biggest shows in the Western Cape, the Swartland Skou has retained much of its rich agricultural background and will delight even the most die-hard city slickers. The Swartland Skou and its predecessor, the Moorreesburg Show has been held since the 1930’s.

De Rust in the Western Cape has been voted Town Of The Year for 2011. The M-Net TV Program announced the winners of the Town Of The Year competition this evening, 10th August 2011. All nine will benefit from increased tourism.


Muizenberg - International Kite Festival - Oct 2011

The Cape Town International Kite Festival on 22 and 23 October 2011 is at the scenic grounds of Zandvlei Recreation Park in Muizenberg.

The international Kite Festival, hosted by Cape Mental Health is now in its 17th year. The festival is a great tourist attraction and a family event not to be missed.

The International Kite Festival attracted over 24 000 visitors last year including overseas competitive professional kiters, who show off with all types of stunt and artistic kites turning the skies above Muizenberg in a cornucopia of moving colours.

There are competitions for flying hand made South African kites with entries closing on 7th October.

For the rest you can have a wonderful weekend either flying or just watching the kites as they prance in the sky over the seaside town of Muizenberg.

The Elgin Open Gardens is a festival of flowers and beautiful gardens spread over two weekends and five various routes in the Elgin Area. The weekends that these Elgin Gardens will be open are 29th and 30th October, and 5th/6th November 2011.

Elgin has been opening their gardens for many years, starting back in the late 60’s and this year 23 gardens from large to small, from old to new , from established to young will be open.

There are entrance fees payable (some venues free), which are nominal, considering the amount of pleasure you will have.  Most of the fees go to charities of the owner’s choice.


Pietermaritzburg - Comrades Marathon - June 2012

The 2012 Comrades Marathon will take place on Sunday,3 June 2012 and will be a "Down Run" from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The race will start outside the City Hall in Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg and finish at the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban. 

Entries for the 2012 Comrades Marathon open on 1 September 2011 and close on Friday 30 November 2011, at close of business, or when the cap of 18,000 entries is reached. For example: if entry numbers reach 18,000 on 7 November 2011 entries will officially close.

Entry fees for the 2012 Comrades Marathon are as follows:
• Local athletes (South African citizens) R300.00
• Rest of Africa Athletes R500.00
• International Athletes US$180.00
The CMA will offer an "early bird" special entry fee for local runners who enter between 1 September


Johannesburg - Cricket T20 Sa vs Australia Oct 2011
