Villiersdorp - Alwyn Vintcent steam tug reaches destination

The Alwyn Vintcent steam powered tug has arrived at Villiersdorp on the final 480km round journey from Cape Town. The last 10 kilometers from its overnight stopover was lined with jubilant residents of Villiersdorp and many visitors who made an early trip to enjoy this brilliant effort to save a piece of engineering genius previously doomed to the scrapheap.

Vintage tractors, motorcycles and cars lead the 108 wheeled transport rig into Villiersdorp around 10.00 this morning.

By 13:00 the old Alwyn Vintcent was nicely settled in an enginnering company's yard where it will undergo a long refurbishment and refitment program, which some say could take up to 5 years.

It is hoped that the Alwyn Vintcent will eventually be floated on Theewaterskloof Dam just outside the village.

At the end of this article there is a download option where you can click on Alwyn Vintcent in Villiersdorp to download a 2mb Powerpoint presentation, which takes a few moments to open  -

We hope you get as much pleasure from these images as we did as we did today. The first image comes from and the second from kristen De Vries in Riebeek West. All the other images were taken by Freda.
