Fauresmith - Fauresmith 200 Endurance Race - June/July 2012

Fauresmith - Fauresmith 200 Endurance Race - June/July 2012

The Annual Fauresmith 200 Endurance Race for Horse and Rider takes place on Tuesday 3rd July to Thursday 5th July, but the Fauresmith event actually starts on Friday 30th June 2012, with all the preliminary events and activities over the following 3 days.  Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts, Self catering and Hotels in and near Fauresmith will be in for a busy time as riders from around the country and abroad descend on Fauresmith for this incredible endurance event.

The distance of the endurance ride on days 1 and 2 is 75 km per day and the final 50 km is on Thursday. The Fauresmith 200 has been running since 1964. In 1965 an attempt was made to sabotage the race and many of the horses were poisoned. The race event was only restored to the endurance riding calendar in 1973 and has been running annually since.

From 17 entrants in 1973 the event has grown to between 200 and 300 entries in 2011. Strict controls are in place and vets constantly check horses throughout the event. Any signs of stress or injury leads to immediate withdrawal by the veterinarian team.

The Fauresmith Town Hall

The Prison built in 1881- which is now the oldest operating prison in South Africa. (guided tours can be arranged)

The church tree is actually a “Kareeboom” which today stands outside the Kosmos Café just north of the Town Hall in the main street of Fauresmith. Back in November 1848 the NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) celebrated “Nagmaal” under this tree and probably continued to do until the first NG Kerk was built around 1849.

 Fauresmith’s Steam Engine

Parked in the main street of Fauresmith is a 1903 class BW Steam Engine numbered 1153, Its on the old line from Jagersfontein through to Koffiefontein and when that rail link was discontinued the local municipality negotiated with the then SAR & H for the old steam engine.
