One of the most awe inspiring sights you will ever see is this great dam overflowing. Right now, the huge Gariep Dam North East of Colesburg is currently at over 100% full and will be so for at least four to five days, if no further rain falls. It's an event that only happens now and again so it may just be the right time to visit the quaint village of Gariep and view this incredible mass of water flowing over the Dam Wall.
The Orange River flows through Gariep and then on to the van der Kloof Dam near Petrusville and Orania. The van der Kloof Dam is almost 97% full today and will probably reach full capacity by 13th February. From there the Orange flows past Hopetown and at Douglas it converges with the Vaal River. This confluence can cause spectacular flooding and devastation.
If you are in the area and are looking for accommodation we recommend Rose Cottage at Gariep Dam (Ref 3154), Guesthouse in Kimberley (Ref 1919), Apartment in Kimberley (Ref 3153)
