South African Book Fair Cape Town June 2014

African Book Fair

There is no better way to spend the cold winter nights than curled up under the covers in a beautiful guesthouse or Cape Wineland hotel reading a book by your favourite author. This month sees Cape Town playing host to the South African Book Fair from the 13th to the 15th of June, a must for any bibliophile. This three day literary fest takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and will afford you the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of South Africa’s top authors like Deon Meyer and best-selling author Susan Lewis, as well as take home some great written works. Make a girls weekend of it and invite your book club members along to enjoy a mouth-watering brunch and book launch or book an apartment big enough for the whole family. The kids can meet some of their favourite book characters like Peter Rabbit, the Gruffalo or even try and spot Wally in the crowd while you browse the exhibits, attend talks and debates or join in one of the workshops designed to hone the skills of aspiring writers. Frank Zappa once said “So many books, so little time.” So don’t waste any more time, book your weekend away today.

Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival - 14 & 15 June 2014

Calitzdorp Port and wine festival

Calitzdorp is a picturesque little town, huddled up in the heart of the Klein Karoo in South Africa. This hidden paradise is also known as the "Port Wine Capitol" of South Africa due to the top-notch quality of the port wines crafted by the locals.

Calitzdorp is the fruit bowl of earthly delights of the Klein Karoo region and the must-see spot for tourists wishing to enjoy and experience the various wonders the region has to offer you.  It's recommended you start with the acclaimed Seven wine cellars, noted for supplying various Port wines that are acclaimed internationally in the world of wine.  The area is also distinguished for its indigenous flora and fauna – it’s an amazing fact that the ecosystem boasts over 500 species of succulents, 200 of which are found nowhere else on earth!

Calitzdorp plans to hold its annual Festival at the historic Calitzdorp Railway Station, and assures its tourists and visitors of a wide selection of entertaining events in and around the various wine cellars and village venues.

The pre-determined roster of events starts on the Friday evening with the full traditional Port Festival programme all day on Saturday and ending on Sunday.  There is a public holiday on Monday, a perfect opportunity to provide you with a chance to visit other places of note in and around the town.
To ensure the festival receives the accreditation it had last year, not only will all the local port and wines be made readily available for tasting, there will also be a "Gourmet Street Market" offering mouth-watering culinary options and delicatessen products.

The Riebeek Kasteel Olive Festival – 3rd May to the 4th May

The Riebeek Kasteel Olive Festival 3rd May to the 4th May

The Riebeek Kasteel Olive Festival takes place in the Swartland area of the Western Cape in May. A feast of wine and top-class olives in South Africa, the festival will also display an Art Exhibition featuring some live entertainment, and of course heralding the arrival of many stalls setting up to sell their wares.

And food of course - so much fine culinary delights for the senses!

The Riebeek Valley Olive Festival is a memorable one seeing as it was voted one of the premium food festivals in the Western Cape due to the fact that it’s home to some of the finest delicacies one’s land is able to cultivate. Olives, wine, cheese, pickles, jams and bread are the specialities, though it would be a sin to forget the idiosyncratic local’s part in making this one go-to-festival you cannot miss!

Though the noble pitted morsels are the main attraction, the event has a lot more to boast about. Aside from honorary olive sampling sessions and memorable culinary tastings, a variety of family-friendly activities and live music will on display for all the visitors to delight themselves with.
