Hermanus Whale Festival takes place from Friday 30th Sept to 10th October. The first four days are filled with lots of entertainment and eco related events, while the last few days incorporate the sports events. Hermanus - Whale Festival Sporting Events

Hermanus Whale Festival Sports Events for 2011 includes Half Marathon, MTB Challenges, Night Runs, MTB Mountain Time Trials, and Mountain Trail Runs.

Saturday 1st October - 21.1 km half marathon and a 6km fun run.

Sunday 2nd October - MTB Mountain Bike Challenge of 7km, 15km, 25km and 45km

Tuesday 4th October - 10km Cliff Path Night Run from Grotto Beach to the New Harbour.

The Joburg Art Fair takes place from 23rd to 25th September at the Sandton Convention Centre. Previous Art Fairs have been held around easter but this year the Show is in September.

The Winner of the FNB Artist Prize will be announced at the show and the three finalists are likely to have their material on display.

23 top South African and International Galleries will be devoting their space to showcase up and coming contemporary African Art. The Official website has this to say about the Fair

 KKNK 2012 (Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees) will take place from 30th March until 7th April 2012 in Oudtshoorn.  Professor Laetitia van Dyk has been appointed CEO of the KKNK from 1st June 2011. Entries for productions for the 18th KKNK in 2012 have already closed, so the board will already be sifting through material to decide what will be on the program.

This 3 day program is for novices, experts and anyone wanting to learn more about birds.Bird expert Joe Grosel is presenting his popular Bird Identification Course at the Nestle Centre, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort, from 30 September to 2 October 2011.

Prof. Derek Engelbrecht will also get participants involved up close and personal while he does some  bird ringing. Delegates will benefit from Joe’s

Hermanus and the Overstrand awarded fifth Important Bird Area

In a recent newsletter the Overberg Birding Route revealed that Birdlife International had awarded the Overberg with it’s fifth Important Bird Area (IBA). The latest IBA is the Overstrand Municipality which stretches from Gansbaai and environs in the east to Rooiels in the West and includes Kleinmond, Onrus and Hermanus.

The other four IBA’s in the district are “The Overberg Wheatbelt”, “De Hoop Nature Reserve”,” Dyer Island Nature Reserve”, and the Southern part of the “Eastern False Bay Mountain IBA”.

The Stanford Strettons Bird Fair 2011 takes place from 30th September to 2nd October.  Organised by Birdlife Walker Bay the Stanford Bird fair is one of the highlights on the birding calendar in the Overberg. There will a number of top class speakers on various birding subjects, a photographic competition with some rather special prizes (Rules for the photo competition), a demonstration by the popular Eagle Encounters and many other attractions to involve the younger folk in birding and conservation..
