Meiringspoort - Rock Carving by CJ Langenhoven -

Herrie Carving

CJ Langenhoven, Celebrated South African Author, Poet, Philosopher and Politician was born and bred in the Klein Karoo and spent his adult years in Oudtshoorn. One of the fictional characters in his books was an elephant called Herrie. One day C J Langenhoven chiselled the name of “Herrie” into the rock face in the beautiful Meiringspoort. At the time he jokingly said that the carving would probably be the only monument to himself. In 1971 the carving was declared a national monument.

Directions to C.J Langenhoven’s carving of Herrie.

From George

Take the N12 over the Outeniqua Pass into Oudtshoorn. As you enter Oudtshoorn the N12 becomes CJ Langenhoven Street. Turn Right into Schoeman Street which the continuation of the N12 to De Rust, Meiringspoort and Beaufort West. Drive through De Rust and into Meiringspoort pass. Roughly half way through Meiringspoort you will see the national monument on your left. There is safe off road parking, and the area is well maintained.

From Johannesburg

On the N1, drive through Beaufort West. A few kilometres outside of Beaufort West turn left onto the N12. Roughly half way through Meiringspoort you will see the national monument on your right. There is safe off road parking, on the right, and the area is well maintained.

Road Safety

Meiringspoort is a beautiful area to travel through and to hike through. It is, however a National Road carrying fairly heavy volumes of traffic. Please take special care as a driver and with small children if you are outside your vehicle.

The carving is not easy to spot at first, as we all tend to look up at the rock face above. It is however very visible when you do find it. Unfortunately some buffoon has spray painted his own name adjacent to the carving, indicating a level of ignorance and disrespect for his fellow South Africans and Visitors to the country.
