Travel - Motor Vehicles - What are driving conditions like in SA?

South Africa has an extensive network of roads from gravel country roads to four lane expressways. The major routes from Cape Town to Johannesburg (N1), Johannesburg to Durban (N3), Pretoria to Polokwane (N1) and Pretoria to Nelspruit (N4) are excellent roads, mainly highway, in some places double carriageways and in some wide single carriagways with one or two lanes in both directions.

The National road from Cape Town to Durban (N2) is excellent in places good in most but does pass through a lot of towns and villages on the way.

Most regional and all national radio stations have regular traffic updates and your inn keeper is normally aware of any major roadworks or other local travel issues in the area.

Speed limits are enforced, mainly by way of camera technology. In towns it is as low as 60km and on highways a maximum of 120km. Signage in most places is good, but if you are unsure, rather slow down until you establish the speed limit.

If your hired vehicle is photographed at speeds above the limit the traffic fine goes directly to the car Hire Company who will automatically claim it from you, via your credit card.

South Africans drive on the left hand side of the road. motorists will pass you on the inside on double carriageways so exercise care when changing lanes, especially to the inside lane.
