Tulbagh - Horse Riding Trails

Slow and Cool
Slow and Cool Credits: HHSA

Tulbagh Horse Trails are based on the farm Vrolikheid which is just 8km north of Tulbagh in the Winterhoek Valley, and nestles between the Witzenberg and the Winterhoek Mountains.

This famous fruit farm, and its horses are synonymous with Tulbagh. Daily, from dawn to dusk, Antoinette and the well groomed horses of Tulbagh Horse Trails are working or playing next to the main road, or out on a ride somewhere in the vicinity. Her professional approach, and excellent knowledge and dedication to the horses are legendary...

Kids, novices, experienced riders, are all most welcome. Antoinette won’t allow a horse to be ridden that is not suitable for the rider. Above all, the necessary precautions are made before a rider will mount any horse.

On the farm different varieties of peaches, apples, pears, plums, wine grapes, butternuts, pumpkins, tomatoes, and oat hay are found. It is famous also for its sun dried fruits. Apart from the horses, a big herd of cattle, as well as several other animals are found here on the farm. Harvest time is from November to March.

Tulbagh Horse Trails has 2 rides – One of 1 hour and one of 2 hours. See them in action in our collection of images

They are along the farm through the orchards and vineyards, past a dam with its reflections of the beautiful mountain peaks. Several bird species, with their well-known sounds are a familiar site. Rides take place with a guide, and are suitable for novices, children, lead rein and experienced riders any time during the day.  Minimum one, maximum 7 riders.

 How to get there

Go North on van der Stel Street and out of Tulbagh. Take the Winterhoek Road which indicates Drostdy Wines, Vrolikheid and Tulbagh Horse Trails. If you do not turn you will pass the Oude Drostdy Museum on your right and the Tevrede Owl Centre on your left
