Count Birds

The last week of November ending on Sunday 29th is National Bird Week. It's everyone's chance to get involved in a little bit of nature conservation. The National Birding week which involves Birdlife South Africa, The Animal Demographic Unit of the University of Cape Town, Sappi and others is the highlight of the annual birding calender.

Essentially everyone involved in the project counts species of birds seen in a certain area at a certain time. All of that information is then fed into the computers of ADU (I think) and they work out how many species are in the country, whether their numbers are up or down. It helps conservationists decide where their focus should be and identifies problems down the road.

We can all help, even if we know very little about birds and birding. What you have to do is register with SABAP2 which is the (South African Bird Atlas Project - No 2. You get a whole lot of stuff to download, forms and instructions and the like.

You can do it as an individual, a family, or even a group. You can just get on with the job or you could turn it into a fantastic fun day/weekend. You need a little bit of gear - a pair of binocs a good field guide water in bottles, a hat and some good quality suntan lotion, some pens and pencils and the forms from SABAP.

You could kindle in your children, and even in yourself, a new outlook on birds and conservation.

Go on - Try it.
