Van Reenens Pass - The Best Biltong Store

Sunday Times
Sunday Times

The Best Biltong in South Africa comes from a small roadside farm stall at the bottom of Van Reenen’s Pass. Everyone has their favourite biltong supplier and but this biltong supplier has the documents to prove that his is the best biltong!

Some years back the “Sunday Times”, South Africa's biggest selling newspaper rated them the Best Biltong makers of the year. Whether it was serious or not, nothing has changed.

The place is called Zandfontein Biltong Store and it is easy enough to find.

On the N3

From Johannesburg you pass through the village of Van Reenen just before you descend the Drakensberg to Kwa Zulu Natal. After you pass through Van Reenen and you reach the bottom of the pass you will see a wooden road side stall on your right. There is also a turn off onto a gravel road that crosses an old steel overhead bridge. Apart from great Biltong they also sell home made ginger beer and a range of other home made products.

From Durban

When you have passed through the Tugela Tollgate near Ladysmith the road returns to a single carriageway. About 4 or 5km from the Tollgate you will see the wooden roadside shop on your left.

They are not open that early so if you want the best biltong around plan your trip so that you get to van Reenen around 09:00

Other things to do in the area.

See the smallest church (Llandaff Oratory) in the country at Van Reenen while you’re in the area.
Catch the spectacular view at windy corner.
Stop for a meal at Pringles outside Harrismith
