The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is situated a few kilometres south of Paternoster. Managed by the Saldanha Bay Municipality the Cape Columbine was declared a Nature Reserve in the early 1970’s.

Cape Columbine Nature reserve include some incredibly beautiful stretches of coastline including Tietiesbaai. The total area is 263 hectares of Cape fynbos and Karroo Succulent veld. Very little is recorded on the number and variety of plants but even to the untrained eye there is a wide spectrum of flora species present.

Small veld inhabitants are plentiful and the area is pristine.Hiking trails throughout the reserve will lead you to various vantage points where you look northwards over Paternoster and further to St Helena Bay, and Southwards towards Saldanha Bay.

Springtime in Cape Columbine Nature Reserve transforms the veld into a mass display of wildflowers and with the bright blue ocean as backdrop it presents a beautiful picture.

One could easily spend a day hiking around and through the reserve and then come back to spend time fishing or relaxing in the various and at Tietties Baai.

The nature reserve is also the site of the Cape Columbine Lighthouse which sadly was the last lighthouse built in South Africa that requires to be manned. The newer lighthouses are automated and much less accessible.

There are 60 camping sites available. Facilities are however fairly Spartan, which is probably in keeping with the unique solitude one finds in this reserve.

Open

Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is open from 07:00 to 19:00. Day visitors are restricted to 150 per day. Campers need to book in advance through Saldanha Bay Municipality.

Cost

Entrance fee to the reserve is R11 per adult (2010) Children, pensioners and group tours are entitled to discounts.
