Swim with Penguins At Boulders Beach Simons Town

Penguins at Boulders Beach

There are over 3000 African 'Jackass' Penguins living here at Boulders Beach and the area is now a National Park. You can see them up close as they frolic in the water and waddle on land, and this is the one place in the world where you can actually swim and sunbathe with them. In a survey done by the BBC, Boulders Beach was rated one of the five best beaches to visit in the world.

If you drive through the seaside village of Simons Town (with the sea on your left), you will see the turn left off to the Boulders Visitor Centre. Park there and pay the

necessary entrance fee to visit this famous colony of African Jackass Penguins, so called for their hilarious braying call. This is a very special experience for young and old. Table Mountain National Park staff, who man the Visitor Centre are extremely knowledgeable and offer guided tours.

Boulders Beach is ideal for kids as huge boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves and here you can swim with the penguins. As with all wildlife care must be taken that the penguins are not fed or touched. They look cute and cuddly but their beaks are razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no hesitation in nipping the odd finger or nose.

The area is open from 08:00 to 17:00 from April to September and from 07:00 to
19:30 in December and January. The rest of the year between 08:00 and 18:30

The entrance fee is R35 for adults and R10 for children 2 to 11 years
