  • Bird Sanctuary – The fine sanctuary is home to 136 bird species, featuring many tropical and beautiful birds, a bird watchers paradise. Permits available at the entrance gate.

  • Butterfly World – The biggest butterfly park in the whole of South Africa, these butterflies fly freely throughout the beautiful garden. Tel 021 875 5628

  • Crocodile Farm – Experience the life of the crocodile with guided tours around the park. Also visit the curio store to prove your courage. Le Bonheur. Tel 021 863 1142

  • Fishing – Permits are required to fish for the Trout and Bass available in the Paarl Mountain Dams, these can be obtained from the Paarl Municipality. Tel 021 807 4500

  • Hiking Trails – Hiking permits are required for the 2 or more day hikes.

  • Mountain Biking – The routes are not strenuous and can therefore be used for family outings. There are several circular routes from 4km to 20km.

  • Afrikaans Language Museum – On the slopes of Paarl Mountain, this monument towers over Paarl. When there one can experience magnificent views.

  • Afrikaans Language Museum – Found in the centre of the little town, and pays tribute to the various languages. Tel 021 872 3441

  • Architecture – The town is considered a treasure with all its Cape Dutch style houses and buildings mostly found in its very long main street. It also boasts the Oldest Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, and it’s still in use.

  • Granite Mountain and Nature Reserve – This granite outcrop is the second largest in the world, and is only outdone by Ayer’s Rock in Australia. The reserve offer picnic spots, scenic walks and drives.

  • Nederburg – Famous for its annual wine auction. This wine estate has won numerous awards for its wines and has tours in English, Afrikaans, French, German and Spanish by appointment, Tel 021 862 3104
