The Huguenots who were fleeing religious  persecution in France in the late 1600's came to Franschhoek, , and on finding that the climate was very like the one in France, decided to plant vines. This area now produces wine for worldwide consumption. It also has many, antique stores, art and craft shops and galleries to view and a host of fine guesthouses and some of the finest restaurants in South Africa.


Boland Hiking Trail – The hike takes about 2 or 3 days to complete. SaveStarting at the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve in Grabouw and ends in the Franschhoek Pass. For permits please enquire on Tel 021 426 0723

  • Boschendal Estate – Beautifully restored, this Cape Dutch manor house is open for viewing. Tel 021 870 4274
  • Franschhoek Pass – One of the many fine mountain passes in South Africa, provides an exquisite view of the valley.
  • Huguenot Monument – Constructed in 1948 to commemorate the Huguenot Heritage.
