Simonstown was previously the Royal Navy’s South Atlantic Base from 1814 until the handover in 1957 to the South African Navy. Simonstown is the place to visit if you are interested in things Naval and South Africa's interesting Maritime and Military History.

Boulders Beach –is covered in large boulders, which provide shelter and shade for beach goers. Boulders offers safe swimming for children and is idyllic for inexperienced snorkellers. This beach is also renowned for the penguins that reside between the rocks.

Foxy Beach – This beach is right next to Boulders beach and is one of only two mainland African Penguin colonies in the world. One can take a closer look as this interesting endangered species.

Seaforth Beach – Safe swimming for all, as well as protection from wind. This beach has slightly more fun for children with a water slide.

 Mineral World Scratch Patch – Definitely a place to take the children, they can spend hours searching through the stones and then taking some home with them. Tel 021 786 2020

Seal Island – The feeding ground of the Great White shark! Home to more than 74 000 Cape Fur Seals and many different species of birds.

Just Nuisance – There is a famous South African story of a dog (Just Nuisance) that was a sailor’s friend. Just Nuisance is now lovingly remembered as in the form of a statue, looking out to sea. The statue is located in Jubilee Square, Simon’s Town.

Roman Rock Lighthouse – The third oldest lighthouse in South Africa,

SA Naval Museum – With its large collection of ship models and naval relics, it’s a must see for naval fans. A decommissioned minesweeper forms part of the museum. West Dockyard, Court Road, Simon’s Town. Tel 021 787 4635

Simon’s Town Museum – Originally constructed for the Dutch Governor in 1777. This museum is reputed to have its own ghost, original slave quarters and a mural of mystery. It also has a replica of the Royal Naval pub. Tel 011 786 3046.

Warrior Toy Museum - This exhibition has numerous Dinky toys, dolls, Meccano, model cars, trains and much, much more. St George’s Street, Simon’s Town. Tel 021 786 3195
