Hermanus - Whale Watching by boat June - November

Whale Watching with Southern Right Charters in Hermanus. Southern Right Charters offer luxury boat based whale watching on a daily basis throughout the “Whale Season”. Experience the majesty of these super sized Southern Right Whales who weigh around 45 tons each as they roll around in the water, most times surprisingly close in to the shoreline.

At times they leap metres out of the water, hold their heads above the water and see what’s going on, do some tail waving and even slapping same on the water but mostly they live in peaceful co-existence with life around them, at a really chilled pace!

On our trip with Southern Right Charters we left the new harbour in Hermanus and moved out into deep water as they travelled around the outer edge of the Walker Bay Marine Reserve and then came back in closer to the shore between The Blue Flag Grotto Beach and Gansbaai. The wind in your face on the way out is stimulating as you watch for other marine life such as seals, dolphins, Bryde’s whale and water birds.

The crew on Miroshca are experts at spotting the whales and we were soon drifting along near a pair of Southern Rights. You need cameras with fairly good zoom features to get close ups as the whales are some distance from the boat.

These two moved into the reserve area (which the crew monitor constantly with their navigation gear) so we pushed off in search of another whale.  One was spotted 4 or 5 hundred metres away and this one was much more active than the first two.

So it went on for two and a half hours before we headed back the way we had come, spotting a Bryde’s whale, Cape Gannets, white and black cormorants and a rare sighting of a large brown Skua from the Arctic region.

Southern Right Charters also do sunset cruises, special function cruises and will tailor a package for you and your group.

Percy Tours in Hermanus can arrange numerous tour packages for you from adventure to wine tasting and even tours to see big game.
