Calvinia - Tankwa Karoo National Park

Calvinia - Tankwa Karoo National Park

The Tankwa Karoo National Park has around 215km of passable gravel roads in the right light passenger vehicles as well as around 30km suitable for 4X4 vehicles only. It is best to check with the Park if your vehicle can manage the routes.  There is also no mobile phone reception in Tankwa Karoo National Park and the nearest store is around 50km away.

No shops, No restaurants, No public phones and no ATM’s. If you really need provisions or you left your favourite tipple at home, wait for normal trading hours and drive 50km or so to Middlepos!

So why do people go to Tankwa Karoo National Park?  The landscape for one, will leave you breathless. The silence, for another, is deafening and the stars on a clear night (and the nights are always clear)
is a spectacle that will rest deep in your inner being for many years, if not forever.

The Tankwa Karoo National Park is arid, mountainous in places, and desert like in others. Situated on the Southern boundary of the Northern Cape it includes the Roggeveld Escarpment in the East, The Cederberg in the West and the Klein Roggeveld Mountains in the South. It is really a place where you can really get away from it all and get in touch with the rich and vast natural beauty of the Karoo and the mystery of a creation millions of years old.

Lazy lizards, slow and steady Tortoises and the ubiquitous Meerkat share the vastness that is Tankwa Karoo with Red Hartebeest, Gemsbok and other species of buck. You’ll have lots of fun finding and identifying a list of mammals supplied at the Park Offices. Birding is just as fascinating in this national park so get a list of birds from the guides as well.

The Tankwa Karoo National Park has expanded from an original 26,000 hectares back in 1986 to 143,600 hectares in 2010. It is an ideal destination for a unique birding, hiking and star gazing vacation.

Things to take with you – Good birding books, books to read, good walking shoes, binoculars, sun protection, hat, lots of cold stuff in summer and warm clothes in winter, and a blow up mattress so you can lie back and watch the stars at night.

All units within Tankwa National Park are spacious for easy access by wheelchair, with one of the Elandsberg Wilderness Camp Cottages specifically designed to accommodate mobility-impaired guests. However, please feel free to contact the Park Office with your specific requirements.
