Greyton - Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail

Greyton - Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail

The Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail is a 14km route that winds through the Riviersonderend Mountains that links the towns of Mc Gregor in the North and Greyton in the South. The Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail passes through the Riviersonderend Conservation area that is situated on state and private land and is also a declared mountain catchment area.

The Conservation Area and the Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail are managed by CapeNature, from the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve which is near Robertson. You can walk the route either way or you can overnight in either Mc Gregor or Greyton and retrace your steps the next day. The starting point is just outside Greyton but ends about 14km south of Mc Gregor. Transport planning is therefore essential.

The Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail is reasonably strenuous and you should be fit and well-equipped. Good water supplies are needed especially in summer and in winter it can be dangerous if the weather conditions become severe. A series of waterfalls and pools known as Oakes Falls provides swimming and resting opportunities for hikers.

The summer months are extremely warm and dry while Mediterranean winters are generally cold and wet. Vegetation in the area is mountain fynbos including many Proteas and Ericas. Some of the Ericas are extremely rare.

Many species of grass are to be seen as well as distinctive riverine vegetation along river courses.

Mammals found in the area include common duiker, grey rhebuck, klipspringer, baboon and dassie. Caracal and small spotted genet are common, and leopards occur but are unlikely to be encountered. You may also spot the Malachite and Cape sugarbirds which are attracted by the vast tracts of “suikerbos” and common pincushion. Black and booted eagles, jackal buzzards and other raptors are sometimes seen.

Hiking parties are limited to 20 and only 50 hikers per day are allowed to tackle the Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail, so it is advisable to book early.  A valid permit is obtainable from Cape Nature and reservations can be done through their office on 021-659 3000.
