Hiking around the Cape Peninsula will give you a much clearer picture of the geography and topography of the fairest Cape. Belonging to a good hiking club has a number of distinct advantages. Take Peninsula Ramblers, for instance. Peninsula Ramblers is a club established over 60 years ago and it is run and managed by a group of very enthusiastic hikers.
To join them is extremely reasonable – R20 joining fee plus an annual membership of R50 for a single person and R70 for a family.
Peninsula Ramblers organise a whole string of interesting hikes from “easy”, through “moderate” to “strenuous”.
Here are some of the hikes they have planned for September 2010.
WEST COAST
Sunday 5 September: Beach walk
Melkbos to Koeberg and back. Meet at 14h30 in the first parking lot after turning right from Sixth Avenue onto Beach Road. The Hike will be along the beach towards Koeberg and back. Bring snacks and water, money for optional dinner / drinks; cozzie for a swim.
Duration: About 3 hours

OVERBERG
Weekend 11 to 12 September: Black Eagle Gorge
Camping in the Klein Swartberg near Caledon, with some hacking of aliens and hikes and walks to suit everyone. Booking essential. Phone or email for details.
WEST COAST
Saturday 11th September 2010: Koeberg Nature Reserve
A hike with a difference with Peninsula Ramblers. Visit the zebras and grysbokke in the rugged fynbos on the 9,5 km Dikkop trail. Either your Identity Book or Passport will allow you through the entrance. Meet at 12h30 for 12h45 under the covered parking (preferably wearing boots and gaiters) with adequate water, hat, snack for the beach break, and rainwear. Contact Ron if you want to share transport.

CAPE TOWN
Saturday 18 September: Table Mountain front contour path
Enjoy a slow, leisurely hike with Peninsula Ramblers from the upper Kloof Nek parking area to the beacon under Kloof corner. Thereafter a moderate hike along the upper contour path, past Platteklip for snacks at Silverstream . Down the traverse via the Zigzags to Tafelberg Road. Meet at Kloof Nek upper parking at 12h30 to allow time to shuttle cars from Kloof Nek to the end of Tafelberg Road.
Duration: 3,5 hours
Fitness level: Moderate. Slow pace.

BAKOVEN/CAMPS BAY AREA
Sunday 26 September: Valley of the Red Gods
Longish ramble around the back table, ascending Diagonal and Porcupine Ravine and down Kasteelspoort. Meet at Theresa Ave at 08h00. Prepare for a full day out in this lovely area. Definitely not for beginners.
Duration: 6 - 7 hours
Fitness level: Strenuous, some rock scrambling
