Howick - Canopy Touring in the Karkloof

The Karkloof Canopy Tour is a unique eco-experience that takes people on a 3 hour adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest.

The concept of guiding people through the upper canopy of a rainforest originated in Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists devised new methods for accessing the forest canopy in order to conduct research on the undiscovered canopy ecosystem.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour soon developed the idea into a breathtaking form of eco-tourism which allowed people to enter and experience a previously inaccessible natural environment. The wonderful thing about a Canopy Tour is that you get to see the ecology from a completely different perspective and when the day is done all that remains as evidence of humans being in the area are the overhead cables.

The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along steel cables suspended up to 30m above the forest floor. The tour comprises seven platforms and eight slides that zig-zag down a pristine forested valley. The scenery and birdlife is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the tour.

How to get there

 From Johannesburg on the N3 take the Howick/Midmar Dam turnoff.

Drive down into Howick and at the T junction with Zeederberg Road turn left which is the  Karkloof/Rietvlei Road. After 17km on this road turn left at the Karkloof Canopy tour sign and travel 2km on this road.

From Durban take the Howick/Midmar exit and turn right over the N3. Drive down into Howick and this road becomes Zeederberg. Proceed on Zeederberg out of Howick on the Karkloof/Rietfontein Road as above.
