Walk the cliff path in Hermanus

Kwaaiwater, Hermanus
Kwaaiwater, Hermanus Credits:

The cliff path in Hermanus is really a one of a kind feature that one will not easily find on ones travels around the world.

The coastline at Hermanus is unique in that while the town is fairly flat there are kilometres of steep cliff faces down to the sea. You are, on long stretches of this walk, twenty to forty metres above the breakers as they crash into the rock face below.

Most of the walk is in coastal fynbos and the area from Kraal Rock in Eastcliff all the way to the New Harbour forms part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

The feature of this 10km path is that you can enter and exit at many points so you can be flexible in how long you want to walk.

You can start either at Grotto Beach in the East or at New Harbour in the West. Your walk will take you through a fine array of fynbos and flowering plants, magnificent seaside homes, brilliant whale watching view points, fishing spots and the old harbour, which is now a museum and national monument.

Most of the route is reasonably flat, paved or hard gravel and young and old can enjoy a refreshing morning or afternoon outdoors.

Some of the navigation points starting at Grotto Beach are

Piet se bos
Voelklip, Kammabaai and Langbaai which are all popular swimming spots.
Kwaaiwater, where the Mossel River empties into the sea
A little further on you detour onto Main Road and bypass the properties that run down to the sea and you rejoin at Kraal Rock, which is a very popular fishing and whale watching point
Then its on to the tidal pool below the Marine Hotel, Bientangs Cave, The Old Harbour and Gearings Point.
Then on to Fick’s Pool , Tamatie Bank, Rietfontein and finally Scotsmans Point just outside the New Harbour Reserve where the path ends.
