Thomas River - An African Legend - Eastern Cape

Thomas River - An African Legend - Eastern Cape

Thomas River Historical Village is located at Thomas River between Cathcart and Stutterheim. It is within the Thomas River Conservancy The story goes that a British Deserter and one time member of the van Der Kemps Missionary, Thomas Bentley, was shot and killed by a poisoned arrow as he was crossing the river and the village subsequently established there in 1801 was named after him.

Thomas River Historical village was acquired by Jeff and Ann Samson in 2003 and since then they have spent the intervening years painstakingly restoring the village.

The Ramble Restaurant forms the focal point of social life at Old Thomas River and they serve country fare with gay abandon. They are open for lunch Wednesdays to Sundays and for dinners on Fridays and Saturdays. Their Carvery on the first Sunday of every month is a hit and people come from far and wide to enjoy the fine spread.

The Thomas River Historical Village includes a vintage car museum, a pub museum, rock art museum and wagon museum as well as an extensive private library.

Outdoors there’s much to do including hiking, fishing, hunting in season, game spotting and bird watching all within the Thomas River Conservancy.

The Village has two self catering holiday homes that can accommodate up to 26 people (one housed the station master and the other the station foreman). There is also a back packer’s dormitory that can house up to 16 people. For details on Thomas River Self Catering

So, although it’s all self catering, Rambles is open from Wednesday to Sunday and I suppose if there are enough of you, you could twist the Samson’s arm to provide additional catering at a fee.
