Fauresmith in the Southern Free State could so easily have been the Capital of The Free State as the House of Assembly voted by two votes to establish Bloemfontein as the Capital.

Fauresmith is the second oldest Free State Town and is approx 130 km South West of Bloemfontein.

Next door to Fauresmith is Jagersfontein, which in its day was a bustling diamond mining centre in the 1800’s.

Things to do in Fauresmith

Visit several building of historical interest
Old Standard Bank (now part of the NG Kerk community centre)
The Post Office building built in 1905
The Fauresmith Town Hall
The Prison built in 1881
The Emily Hobhouse Textile School

Visit the “Church Tree”

The church tree is actually a “Kareeboom” which today stands outside the Kosmos Café just north of the Town Hall in the main street of Fauresmith. Back in November 1848 the NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) celebrated “Nagmaal” under this tree and probably continued to do until the first NG Kerk was built around 1849.

Fauresmith’s Steam Engine

Parked in the main street of Fauresmith is a 1903 class BW Steam Engine numbered 1153, Its on the old line from Jagersfontein through to Koffiefontein and when that rail link was discontinued the local municipality negotiated with the then SAR & H for the old steam engine.

Fauresmith’s Annual Endurance Race

Every year Fauresmith hosts the annual Endurance Race for Horse and rider.
