Calvinia is in the Great Karoo and nestles along the foot of the Hantamberg Mountains and the Oorlogskloof River. To get there take the R27 from Upington or on the R63 from Carnarvon and Williston.
Although early settlers were in the area as far back as 1750 it was only in 1847 that the NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) was established in the area. In 1848 the NG Kerk bought 1400 hectares of land and established the church site and the stands of "Hantam'. In 1851 the resident Dominee proposed that the name of Hantam be changed to Calvinia in tribute to religious reformist John Calvin.

For a small town there is much to do

The museum is located in a series of buildings centred on the old synagogue and house interesting collections of copper and silversmiths work, tools and working circumstances, as well many items depicting life in those early days of the Hantam.
For details on opening times for the museum call 027 341 1043

There is also the biggest working post box in the world and letters posted from there receive a special memorial stamp.

In early spring the wild Namaqualand flowers give a great showing of themselves thus making Calvinia the logical starting point of a Namaqualand tour that incorporates Nieuwoudville.

Other Things To Do

Hike through the Akkerendam Nature Reserve which gives you a wonderful perspective of the town. Hundreds of bird species, springbok and other endemic buck are to be found at Akkerendam.
For more details on Akkerendam call 027 - 341 1043.

There is also the Little Canyon hiking route at Vondelingsfontein. For more details on cost and times available call 027 - 341 2246 or 082 835 4779

About 105km south of Calvinia on the R355 is the Tankwa Karoo National Park which is well worth a visit, for three things – the birds and small animals, the fauna and the most unbelievable landscapes. Actually, there's a fourth thing even better than those three, and that's the stars at night that seem to reach down to you from the dark skies in a display that you will find hard to replicate anywhere in the world.

Visit the NG Moederkerk which was built in 1899/1900 right in the middle of the Anglo Boer war. It is a National Monument in beautiful Neo Gothic style

Visit the Dorphuis which is a beautiful example of Victorian Architecture built in 1855 and also a National Monument.

There is also the Tortoise Garden at 21 Pastorie Street in Calvinia (027 341 1279)

For more details on Calvinia speak to the locals when you're there or call the Tourist Officer on 027-341-8100

4 X 4 enthusiasts can enjoy themselves on various 4 X 4 trails in the area
