Madre's Kitchen in Stanford makes the most unbelievable baked cheese cake. We were back there over the weekend, after a few hours on a hiking trail, to sample yet another piece.
It was as good as always, but here's the thing. There is a resident Pied Kingfisher that hangs around by the little dam right outside Madre's.
There, he (or she) was, sitting on overhead telephone wires and periodically diving in for a tasty morsel. So you can not only dine well at Madre's but you can do a bit of bird watching in style. According to the staff the kingfisher is a regular visitor at the dam so hopefully your luck will be in and you'll get a glimpse of this graceful forager.
