Hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains - Anytime

Drakensburg Hike Holiday Homes

Hiking trails in the Drakensberg could be either an adventure for the whole family, perhaps a lover’s hike or even a group journey with friends. Whether you prefer to take a serene stroll through secluded shaded valleys or take on the challenge of Man Vs.  Mountain, the Drakensberg will cater to all your exploratory wants in this trekker’s utopia.

The most pleasant aspect about hiking trails in the Drakensberg is the wide range of fascinating landmarks that can be reached with a comfortable walk and minimal climbing required. Most accommodations within the Drakensberg region can recommend a wide variety of routes.

If you’d prefer ambling through indigenous fern forests to admire a nearby attraction, such a route could be suggested for you in minutes. Or if you prefer a more strenuous one-day hike that trails over winding rivers and rolling hillsides, then that could be easily arranged. Few pleasures in life beat walking or hiking in the high country, filling your lungs with crisp clean mountain air as you enjoy the blissful sights and sounds of nature.

In winter, the higher reaches become spectacular snow-covered terrain, transforming the valley and peaks into a virgin-white Wonderland from some magical fairy-tale.

Plan today for the holiday you wouldn’t forget for years to come!

Their only connection with the outside world was via foot and donkey trails up “die Hel” to the top of the Swartberg Pass and then down the mountain to either Calitzdorp or to Prince Albert. A road was built in 1962 and opened in 1963.
