Hermanus - Bientangs Cave

Bientangs Cave Seafood Restaurant is in a “cave” on the rock face of the cliffs in front of the Hermanus Market Square. Legend has it that Bientang was the last Koi Strandloper around 100 years or so ago.

The ingenious construction of the restaurant creates a real cave feeling but the best seating on a wind still day is outside on the terrace or even down on the rocks below.

Bientangs Cave has a comprehensive seafood menu and for kids they do a superb chicken or beef burger. The wine list is good although somewhat pricey.

Bientangs Cave is open for breakfasts from 09:00 to 11:00 and for lunch from 11:30 to 16:00, depending on the weather.

For private functions they will open in the evening. The climb up and down to Bientangs Cave is fairly steep and could be difficult for some. There’s an alternative route out of the cave that is a little longer and not as steep but again caution should be exercised if taking frail people out.

After all that – the food is great, the staff attentive, and the view, particularly in whale watching season is sublime.

Booking is essential so call Bientangs Cave on 028 312 3454. The email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and they have a website at where you can see the menu and do your booking.

How to get there

From Onrus drive into Hermanus. Turn right into St Peter Lane (next to the stone church in Main Road). Go down to the T junction and turn left.

Park anywhere along the promenade close to Gearings Point and the Old Harbour (in designated parking areas of course) and walk to the well marked stairs to Bientangs Cave.

From Gansbaai go through the second traffic circle and then turn left past the Marine Hotel. Drive into the parking area. Bientangs is at the other end of the parking area.
