Swellendam - Canola Fields a Festive Sight

Canola Fields
Canola Fields Credits: "Freda"

Canola plants, grown for their oil, flower in late July through to mid September. When they do it is a quite beautiful sight. Canola is a derivative of rapeseed and there is a lot of debate regarding the qualities of Canola Oil, but there is little to beat the sight of Canola fields around Swellendam (and other parts of the Cape) in full bloom.

Of course wheat fields and maize fields and vineyards and fields full of sheep and herds of Herefords are just as beautiful. I suppose it depends where you are, and the time of year!

Clarens - Abseiling

Down you Go
Down you Go Credits: Clarens Xtreme

Abseiling has become a major sporting activity in its own right. It’s the method climbers use to get off a mountain - or special force military and rescue personnel use to descend buildings. Abseiling at Clarens is fun, and it is quite safe, once you overcome the shock of hanging suspended in mid air!

Clarens Xtreme’s abseiling experience is at Swartland, which is a 50m high sandstone rock face overlooking the picturesque town of Clarens. 50m is about 20 storeys high! It is an easy hike up the back of the cliff and with a vertical drop at the face, it offers breathtaking views of the

Yzerfontein - Lime Kilns - National Monuments

Lime Kilns near Yzerfontein
Lime Kilns near Yzerfontein Credits:

Lime Kilns similar to the ones near Yzerfontein were first used for converting mussel shells into lime in South Africa within 18 months of Jan van Riebeeck landing at the Cape. Up until then the VOC (east India Company) personnel had been living in wood and mud structures which offered little shelter against the Cape winter.

Lime was needed as cement and as mussel shells were plentiful they were used in these lime kilns. The only two remaining lime kilns are to be seen on the R315 toward Yzerfontein on the West Coast.

The Church at Mamre
The Church at Mamre Credits:

Mamre Village is situated just off the R307, between the towns of Darling and Atlantis. Mamre Village has a long and chequered history that can be traced back to the late 1600’s and not many years after Jan van Riebeek landed at the Cape

Mamre Village is a National Heritage Site with some of the buildings being erected as far back as 1692. In 1682, the original farm where Mamre stands today was called Groenekloof and in 1697 it was named “De Kleine Post”

Paternoster - A Day at Tietiesbaai

Tietiesbaai Credits:

Tietiesbaai is situated in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve at Paternoster on the West Coast. Tietiesbaai is a sheltered beach in a cove flanked by incredibly beautiful rocks which reduce the waves out at sea to mere ripples in the little bay.

Tietiesbaai is an ideal spot for campers, fisherfolk and families wanting to spend a day out in the sunshine away from the commercialness of city beaches. Facilities are fairly spartan and you need to take your own barbeque equipment with you.
