Kimberley is famous for The Big Hole. Started in mid1871 The Kimberley Diamond Mine fast became known as the Big Hole in Kimberley

The Kimberley Big Hole is allegedly the deepest and biggest hand dug hole in the world. It measures 215 metres deep and the perimeter of the hole is around 1.6km (The folks at Jagersfontein, in the Free State, think their hole is bigger!)

Boesmanland is situated on the grounds of Club Mykonos in Langebaan, on the West Coast. This dining experience is something quite different as Boesmanland have perfected the art of cooking large quantities of food in giant cast iron pots. In the old days they were known as seeppots (soap pots).

Boesmanland specialises in old fashioned boerekos along the lines of Tamatie bredie, boontjie bredie, soet patats, roast lamb, snoek, pickled fish, fresh baked bread with real “plaas konfyt” as

Hermanus - Bientangs Cave

Gulls at Gearings Point

Bientangs Cave Seafood Restaurant is in a “cave” on the rock face of the cliffs in front of the Hermanus Market Square. Legend has it that Bientang was the last Koi Strandloper around 100 years or so ago.

The ingenious construction of the restaurant creates a real cave feeling but the best seating on a wind still day is outside on the terrace or even down on the rocks below.

Bientangs Cave has a comprehensive seafood menu and for kids they do a superb chicken or beef burger. The wine list is good although somewhat pricey.

Canola Fields

Canola plants, grown for their oil, flower in late July through to mid September. When they do it is a quite beautiful sight. Canola is a derivative of rapeseed and there is a lot of debate regarding the qualities of Canola Oil, but there is little to beat the sight of Canola fields around Swellendam (and other parts of the Cape) in full bloom.

Of course wheat fields and maize fields and vineyards and fields full of sheep and herds of Herefords are just as beautiful. I suppose it depends where you are, and the time of year!
