Apart from many unique species of birds, reptiles and other wildlife, Calvinia is well known for it's spectacular spring flower miracle which is one of the main natural tourist attractions of South Africa, and what an attraction it is! In season there are hundreds of flowers every square metre over  hundreds of hectares and over hundreds of kilometres ... a sight beyond description. Displays usually reach their peak towards the middle of August and draw to a close at the end of September. Depending on the rainfall, the flowers may bloom from mid-July.

Calvinia is in the Namaqualand area of the Karoo and nestles along the foot of the Hantamberg Mountains and the Oorlogskloof River. To get there take the R27 from Upington or on the R63 from Carnarvon and Williston.
Although early settlers were in the area as far back as 1750 it was only in 1847 that the NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) was established in the area. In 1848 the NG Kerk bought 1400 hectares of land and established the church site and the stands of "Hantam'. In 1851 the resident Dominee proposed that the name of Hantam be changed to Calvinia in tribute to religious reformist John Calvin.
