Description

This is truly an unique guesthouse in Fouriesburg.

Spend the night in a newly restored sandstone house dating from the 1880's, and experience its old-world charm.

and is truly the "Highlight of the Highlands". Situated a mere 10km from the Lesotho-border, just 34 km from Clarens, the arts and crafts village, within easy reach of ski-resorts and the Katse Dam, the highest dam wall in Africa, and many more sights and activities makes Fouriesburg the ideal base from which to explore the Eastern Free State!

Fouriesburg was proclaimed the capital of the Free State during the Anglo Boer war because the state president Steyn resided in this town. The "presidensie" can still be seen. The town is also known for its sandstone buildings.

Surrender Hill is a memorial to the fallen Boers and British soldiers. Four thousand boers surrendered here and the majority were sent to India as prisoners of war. The Surrender Hill marathon takes place on the last Saturday in February and serves as a qualifier for the Comrades' marathon.

The largest sandstone overhang in the Southern Hemisphere, Salpeterkrans, is still used for ancestral worship by local tribes.

The Fouriesburg Asparagus festival has been running for over thirty years and usually takes place in the first weekend in October.

The district is very rich in Bushman rock art and various sites can be visited. One of these is at the Wyndford farm.

Fouriesburg is a convenient base to visit the Ficksburg Cherry Festival in November.

The Eastern Free State is the ideal place for abseiling and rock climbing. A variety of hiking trails are also popular. Various 4x4 routes challenge drivers and quid biking ads to the menu for adventurers.
